The Rather Boring Story Behind Pineapple Pizza
A beautiful Hawaiian sunset is the location of a slice of pineapple pizza rising from a cloud. Situated between the band name and the song title, the slice sits, unassuming, looking tasty. Unless you hate pineapple pizza, in which case, it’s an abomination and makes me nauseous just thinking about it.
“Pineapple Pizza” is a wholly silly and utterly stupid song. That’s the entire point. Sung from the perspective of a self-important, egotistical person, it mocks a rather silly concept: the divisive nature of putting pineapple on one’s pizza.
Personally, I enjoy a little bit of pineapple and Canadian bacon on my pizza. To each his own and all that. There are some, however, who would see Pineapple Pizza abolished from the face of the earth. As pizza toppings go, pineapple can’t be beat. That’s all we’re trying to say here. Come on, folks. Give peas a chance.
No pineapples were harmed in the making of this recording, but one did run off with a coconut and papaya at some point during mixing and mastering. If you’ve seen him, please return him to your nearest Domino’s, Little Ceaser’s, Pizza Hut or other local pizza-selling establishment immediately.
Want to play along? It’s as easy as knowing how to play an “E” and an “A” chord in the open position. During the chorus, it’s varied a bit, with an “A” and “G” chord in the second position thrown in for good measure. Try it on a ukulele, with lap steel accompaniment for the true Hawaiian experience.
Verse – Rhythmically switch between and open E and an open A chord. Add flourishes as you see fit.
Chorus – Strum the open E and A chords, loudly and sloppily.
Musical interludes – in this space between the verse and the chorus, perform a few chord stabs with 2nd position A and G chords, ending on the E chord, which leads us back into the verse.
Solo – there isn’t a solo here, but if you choose to play one, just hit the E chord and pluck the open E string. Or whatever.

Recording
The basic track for this performance of the song was recorded in a bedroom studio. Using nothing but a TASCAM DR-22W, a Harmony H162 acoustic guitar and my own voice, I recorded this tune in one take. Then I did another take. And a third. 17 takes later, I had a basic track I was happy with.
Then, my friend Brad Stanfield—the famous voice and guitar behind Dr. Demento Show favorites “Gumball Wizard” and “The Waffle Whiffer”—offered to assist me with additional vocals, drums and bass for the song. I took him up on the offer and a few weeks later, the final form of the song emerged.
Genre
Is it comedy? Novelty? Rock? And/or Roll? It’s difficult to classify. Let’s just call it weird and go grab a cup of coffee.
